The Packaging Blind Spot
Most brewery owners spend months agonizing over their brewhouse configuration and fermentation tank selection. Then they order a filling machine like they are buying a dishwasher — pick one, plug it in, move on.
That is a mistake. Packaging is where brewing ends and the brand experience begins. The container you choose protects beer from oxygen and light. The filling machine you buy determines whether that protection actually happens.
The Small-Batch Reality
One of the most important trends in craft beer filling is the ability to handle small batches. Rittmayer Brewery, one of Germany’s oldest family-owned breweries, now fills volumes as low as 15 hectoliters per beer type. That flexibility is not a luxury. It is a necessity for breweries that rotate recipes seasonally and experiment with limited releases.
The challenge is that most filling equipment was designed for large-scale industrial operations. A Krones can filler that handles 12,000 containers per hour is overkill for a brewery producing 500 barrels a year. But a manual filler that cannot control dissolved oxygen is a recipe for stale beer.
What to Look For
Oxygen control. This is the single most important feature. Every step of the packaging process must minimize oxygen pickup. The industry target is less than 50 parts per billion total package oxygen. Below 30 ppb is excellent. Above 100 ppb guarantees noticeable staling within 60 days.
Format flexibility. Can the machine handle different can sizes? Different bottle shapes? Kegs? A machine that locks you into one format limits your distribution options.
Changeover time. If it takes four hours to switch from cans to bottles, you are not going to switch often. That means you will say no to opportunities. Short changeover times are paramount for operations that process small batches and many different container formats.
Counter-pressure filling. This is the difference between a professional fill and a foamy mess. Counter-pressure filling maintains carbonation and reduces oxygen ingress.
The 4-in-1 design. Some newer filling machines integrate rinsing, filling, capping, and labeling into a single monoblock. The advanced 4-in-1 design addresses the critical issue of oxidation by minimizing the time beer is exposed to air between filling and sealing.
The Canning Shift
The craft beer industry has overwhelmingly shifted to cans. Aluminum took significant container share from glass among craft brewers. The can does not weigh much, boasts a high recycling rate, and does not entail any losses in quality.
For small to medium craft breweries, canning lines offer a clear path to scale. A 2-head automatic can filling and seaming machine can handle 800 to 1,000 cans per hour — perfect for capacities ranging from 500L to 1200L.
The Keg Option
Kegs offer the lowest oxygen exposure when properly purged, the lowest packaging cost per serving, and are the best choice for draft-focused businesses. A 1-station keg filling machine delivers high-performance filling with minimal footprint.
The trade-off: kegs are limited to on-premise accounts, require draft system infrastructure, are heavy to handle, and require significant initial investment — approximately $100 to $150 per keg.
The Real Question
Before you invest in a filling machine, ask yourself: what percentage of my beer will be sold on-premise versus off-premise? What is my distribution radius? What is my target annual production volume? Do I have the space and capital for an in-house line?
The answers to those questions will tell you whether you need a canning line, a bottling line, a keg filler, or some combination.
Not sure which filling machine fits your production volume? We help breweries match packaging equipment to their actual output — not to what looks impressive in a catalog.
